Leeds-based TJ Pybus Construction is defying the economic climate with an astonishing increase in turnover of more than 300% in the past year and is racing towards an annual turnover of £2million.
In its first year to October 2007, the residential and commercial construction services company reported a turnover of £295,000 – a figure that increased to more than £895,000 by October 2008. The business has subsequently achieved an average monthly turnover of £150,000 to January 2009. Add to this a forward order book of £1.4million and the company is set to reach £2million just three years since it was established. The TJ Pybus team has increased exponentially alongside this success, growing in size from just two to 26 in the same timeframe with plans for further recruitment.
Founded in October 2006 by Harrogate-born Tom Pybus, TJ Pybus Construction carries out both commercial and residential projects of any scale, but its bread and butter to date has been property conversions and renovations. Stunning projects with exceptional attention to detail in both workmanship and service have seen the business win new contracts through emphatic customer recommendation and reap national awards for its exceptional work and refreshing, service-driven approach.
34-year-old Tom has worked his way through the ranks of the construction industry, starting his career as a qualified timeserve joiner, before becoming a foreman, assistant site manager and then site manager. Tom eventually decided that it was time to draw upon this wealth of experience and set up his own business.
“The construction industry was receiving a really bad press,” says Tom. “Stories of ‘cowboy’ builders were everywhere but I knew this wasn’t representative of the industry as a whole and it certainly wasn’t representative of my own work ethic. I decided I wanted to start a business that could be an antidote to the stereotype.
“At TJ Pybus Construction we pride ourselves on our customer service and being completely transparent throughout every aspect of the building process. Every project has a start date and an end date that are strictly adhered to and every aspect of the work is detailed and costed from before the work begins.
“Each contract has a dedicated foreman or site manager to run the project on a daily basis, and myself or the contract manager will visit the sites every day to personally oversee the running of the project and update the client on progress.”
Many clients are so happy with their new look homes and the exceptional levels of service they experience that they put forward Tom and his team for industry awards. The company has received a number of regional awards from the Federation of Master Builders, with one extension project in Menston recently being named as the national winner in the ‘best small renovation project’ category.
“That was a very proud moment,” commented Tom. “For that project to be named as the best in the UK and for the nomination to come from the client is just the best possible endorsement of what we do.”
However, Tom isn’t complacent in his success and has big plans for future growth. These plans came a step closer recently, when Tom achieved one of his long-held ambitions – a contract to build a new home entirely from scratch.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,” says Tom. “To be chosen by someone to build their home is a great honour. The team really is looking forward to this challenge and we’re hoping it’ll lead to more new build contracts.”
